Stationery is optional: flat shoes are essential

PMA students are expected to hit the ground running. Literally, we learnt on our first day. We'd sat down no more than an hour before being sent on a fact-finding mission around Victoria. For the girls in heels, the first lesson in journalism became painfully clear.

Come rain or shine (it was raining) news writing begins with groundwork. No great story ever started with: “This one time, I was sat at my desk when…” Good reporters get out there and find the information their readers need to see.

It’s now day three and I have already discarded my shiny new work shoes for some trusty loafers. This may not be the most glamorous industry, but that’s what stops it from being dull.
