Our first day at PMA was a full on information overload about how we will “magically” become journalists with the equivalent of 2 years work experience in the industry, in 9 weeks! The main focus of PMA training being geared towards getting us jobs in a competitive, floundering industry where there are less and less jobs. Why are we doing it? Because by the end of it we will love it, according to Roberta, whether we care about what we are writing about or not! That was the good news.
It was a lot of taking things on board rather than being put to the test immediately. By the end of the day everyone seemed dumbstruck with terror about how we are to achieve this complete transformation in such a short amount of time, but perhaps secretly full of nervous excitement by the prospect – that it will “magic wand” happen!
You get given all the stationary required, but it might be handy just to bring a pen and small notebook for introductory stuff. It really isn’t a horrid beginning where you all have to stand up and talk about why you think you’ve got what it takes to make it in the journalist world. In fact you come away totally confident in Roberta’s and Keith’s desire and passion to turn us into the best there is! Disclaimer: Lets see how my grammar has improved by my next post!
